In a recent move to boost South–South trade, China has announced the removal of tariffs on a wide range of African imports from 53 of Africa’s 54 countries.
This policy shift marks the beginning of a new chapter in China–Africa trade and is expected to create significant opportunities for Chinese exporters while strengthening ties with fast-growing African economies.
While the full impact is yet to unfold, the new policy lays the groundwork for easier market access and increased cross-border trade in the near future.
Overview of China–Africa
Tariff Policy Changes
As of June 2025, under the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), China has officially begun removing tariffs on more than 8,000 African products. These include high-potential items such as cocoa, coffee, fruits, textiles, minerals, and processed foods.
This strategic move aims to support Africa’s economic development, expand China’s sourcing options, and reinforce long-term trade partnerships.
Although it's still early, this change is already signaling a more open landscape for African goods entering China — and for Chinese businesses looking to engage more deeply with African markets.
Impact on China–Africa Trade

While still in its early stages, this policy is expected to significantly improve access for Chinese exporters to African markets. Many African countries are currently investing in infrastructure, industrial zones, and urban expansion — all of which will likely drive higher demand for Chinese goods such as machinery, electronics, construction materials, and daily consumer products.
Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers are looking to benefit from new sourcing opportunities. Nations like Ghana, Zambia, and Ethiopia are poised to become increasingly important suppliers of cotton, copper, and cocoa, supporting supply chain diversification and cost reduction for Chinese industries.
Impact on Logistics & Supply Chains

As China–Africa trade volume begins to grow, shipping and logistics activities are expected to ramp up, particularly in sea freight.
Major Chinese ports such as Guangzhou and Ningbo are expected to see increased outbound traffic if China–Africa trade grows as anticipated. Similarly, some key African ports, including Mombasa, Lagos, and Abidjan, have been investing in capacity upgrades in recent years, positioning themselves to better handle future trade volumes with China.
This anticipated trade growth highlights the increasing need for efficient logistics services — including freight forwarding, customs clearance, bonded warehousing, and last-mile delivery.
Navigating
the China–Africa Opportunity
As this trade shift unfolds, opportunities are emerging across the African continent. From consumer markets to resource partnerships, Chinese businesses are eyeing strategic entry points.
Morocco, in particular, is gaining early attention as a logistics hub, thanks to its modern ports, such as Tangier Med, and its location bridging Africa and Europe. Morocco offers a strategic gateway into Africa, while countries such as Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Ghana also present strong potential with their growing economies, expanding infrastructure, and increasing demand for Chinese goods.
